Answers to Common Questions About Your Deep Sea Sportfishing Charter
Planning your ultimate deep sea sportfishing adventure? Whether you’re a seasoned angler or heading offshore for the first time, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions about our charters to help you prepare for an unforgettable day on the water.
Do I need to be an experienced angler to enjoy the trip?
Not at all. Whether you’ve never held a rod or you’re a seasoned pro, our crew is here to help. On a private 6-pack charter, you get one-on-one coaching. We’ll handle the baiting, the tangles, and the “heavy lifting” so you can focus on the fight.
What should I bring (and leave behind)?
Bring: Layers of clothing (it’s always colder on the water!), a hat, polarized sunglasses, non-spray sunscreen, and a small soft cooler with any food or drinks you would like to have with you. Plus another larger cooler to leave in your car for your fillets. Rainboots are nice to have, but not a must.
How should we handle seasickness?
The Monterey Bay can be “sporty.” If you’re concerned, we recommend taking a motion sickness remedy (like Dramamine or Bonine) the night before your trip and again an hour before we leave the dock. Once on board, stay on deck, keep your eyes on the horizon, and avoid looking at your phone.
What about a fishing license?
Every passenger 16 years or older must have a valid California Sport Fishing License in their possession. A Crab endorsement is required for all of our crabbing trips, but no other stamps will be required. A license can be found at any Sporting Goods Store, or online at: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Fishing-Map/Central
2026 Rates: A 1-day license is currently $21.09.
Where to get it: You can purchase it online at the CDFW website or at local bait shops in Moss Landing. Digital copies on your phone are acceptable!
Is it kid-friendly?
Absolutely. We love introducing the next generation to the sport. While there is no official age limit, we generally recommend children be at least 6 years old for the best experience. We provide life vests, but if you have a high-quality, comfortable vest for your child, feel free to bring it.
What is the customary tip for the crew?
Tipping is a standard part of charter culture, similar to a restaurant. A gratuity of 15–20% of the trip price is customary for the crew’s hard work, gear maintenance, and fish processing. Cash is king, but we can usually accommodate digital payments if needed.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your safety is our priority. If the Captain determines that the swell or wind makes the trip unsafe or highly unproductive, we will cancel or reschedule. If we cancel due to weather, you will receive a full refund or a priority booking for a later date.
What is your cancellation policy?
In order to be eligible to receive a full refund of your deposit for your charter trip, we ask that you please let us know of your need to cancel at least 7 days prior to the date of your trip.
What’s included in the price?
We provide an “all-inclusive” gear experience:
- High-end rods and reels
- All bait, lures, and terminal tackle
- Professional fish cleaning and filleting
- Fish will be placed in zip lock bags
- Ice to keep your catch fresh while on the boat
How do I book the trip?
Booking information can be found under the Book Now page of this site. A 20% deposit is required to book and reserve your deep sea fishing trip. You may pay the remaining balance in cash or Venmo on the day of your trip.
